Root Canal

Root Canal Treatment in Cowra — Save Your Tooth Without the Stress

What is a root canal?

A root canal is a dental treatment that removes infection or damage from inside a tooth. It’s used to treat problems in the pulp — the soft tissue in the centre of the tooth that contains nerves and blood vessels. Once the infected pulp is removed, the space is cleaned, filled and sealed to protect the tooth.

Why would I need a root canal?

You might need a root canal if the pulp inside your tooth becomes infected or inflamed due to:

  • Deep decay
  • A crack or chip
  • Repeated dental work on the same tooth
  • An injury, even if the tooth looks fine on the outside

If left untreated, this kind of infection can lead to ongoing pain, swelling, and even tooth loss.

What are the signs I might need a root canal?

Some people have no symptoms, but common signs include:

  • Tooth pain (especially when biting or chewing)
  • Sensitivity to hot or cold that lingers
  • Swelling or tenderness in the gums
  • Darkening of the tooth
  • A pimple-like bump on the gum near the tooth

If you’re experiencing any of these, it’s best to book in for a check-up as soon as possible.

Does a root canal hurt?

Not with modern dentistry. A root canal might sound intimidating, but the procedure itself is usually no more uncomfortable than getting a filling. Our dentists use local anaesthetic and gentle techniques to keep you relaxed throughout. Most patients are surprised by how straightforward it is.

What happens during the procedure?

A typical root canal involves:

  1. Numbing the area so you don’t feel a thing
  2. Creating a small opening in the tooth to access the infected pulp
  3. Cleaning and shaping the root canals
  4. Filling and sealing the space to prevent future infection
  5. Restoring the tooth, often with a crown, to keep it strong and protected

It usually takes 1–2 appointments depending on the complexity of the tooth.

What happens after a root canal?

After the treatment, your tooth might feel a little tender for a day or two, but that settles quickly. Once it’s properly restored (usually with a crown), your tooth should feel and function just like normal.

Is it better to just remove the tooth?

Saving your natural tooth is usually the best option if possible. It helps maintain your bite, supports neighbouring teeth, and avoids the need for more extensive treatments like implants or bridges. Our dentists will always talk through all your options and help you decide what’s best for your situation.

How much does a root canal cost?

The cost depends on the tooth and how complex the treatment is. Molars, for example, have more roots and take longer to treat than front teeth. We’ll give you a clear quote before we begin, and we’re happy to discuss payment plan options if needed.
