Tooth Extractions in Cowra — Safe, Straightforward and Always Explained
When is a tooth extraction necessary?
We always aim to save natural teeth wherever possible — but sometimes, an extraction is the best option. A tooth may need to be removed if it’s:
- Severely decayed or broken beyond repair
- Causing overcrowding or preventing orthodontic treatment
- Infected and unable to be treated with a root canal
- A baby tooth that hasn’t fallen out on its own
- A wisdom tooth causing pain or problems
Our dentists will always talk you through your options before recommending removal.
Is a tooth extraction painful?
Not with modern techniques. Our dentists use local anaesthetic to numb the area, so you won’t feel any pain during the procedure — just a bit of pressure. We’ll make sure you’re comfortable before we begin and explain each step as we go.
After the procedure, there may be some tenderness or swelling, but we’ll give you clear aftercare instructions to help with healing.
What happens during the extraction process?
- Consultation – We assess the tooth with an exam and X-ray to plan the best approach.
- Anaesthetic – The area is numbed so you’re completely comfortable.
- Removal – The tooth is gently loosened and removed. In more complex cases, a surgical extraction may be needed.
- Aftercare – We give you a detailed plan for looking after the area while it heals.
The whole process is usually quicker and easier than most people expect.
How long does it take to heal?
Most people feel back to normal within a few days, but full healing can take a couple of weeks. We’ll give you clear instructions about eating, cleaning the area, and managing any discomfort. If stitches are used, they’re often dissolvable — but we’ll let you know what to expect either way.
What are the risks of not removing a problematic tooth?
Leaving an infected, damaged, or impacted tooth in place can lead to ongoing pain, infection, swelling, and damage to nearby teeth or bone. If removal has been recommended, it’s usually because the risks of leaving it outweigh the benefits of keeping it.
What happens after a tooth is removed?
If a permanent tooth is removed, we’ll talk to you about replacement options such as a bridge, denture or dental implant. Not every tooth needs to be replaced — especially wisdom teeth — but if it affects your bite or smile, we’ll make sure you’re aware of the best options.
How much does a tooth extraction cost?
The cost depends on whether it’s a simple or surgical extraction, and how many teeth are being removed. We’ll give you a clear quote before starting treatment, and can also discuss payment options. If you have private health cover with dental extras, some of the cost may be claimable.
